BatMUD Guide to Minting Coins (by Dryad)
About Coin Minting
Shinarae re-introduced minting coins into the game in December 2005.
The skill is an updated, limited version of the old forge coin skill.
The skill requires some cooperation between alchemists and merchants.
Alchemists have the skill "mint coins" and can turn raw ore of the
various metal types into coin blanks. Merchants with their law skills
can stamp the coin blanks, turning them into legal tender. Merchants
are allowed to stamp a limited quantity of blanks of each coin type per
month, thus keeping the economic impact in tune and the merchants employed.
As Shinarae explains, "Only merchants understand the real implications
of economic laws. An alchemist might be able to form the coins, but only a
master merchant can get the license they require to make them, and only a
merchant can get the best rate when turning in the 'blank' coins made by the
skill into real cash."
How Mint Coins Works -- Alchemist Skill
Skill duration: 10.
Type of skill : special skill.
Affecting stats: dex.
It uses 25 endurance points.
Everyone seems to feel their money is disappearing, but this is a truth about
any economy. Coins get lost, corrode to worthlessness, or get worn down to
faceless, valueless chips of metal. To keep the shops open and workers paid,
more money can be minted and introduced -- in limited quantities. This heavily
regulated skill allows the knowledgable user to make blank coins, which need
only be stamped by a government official to become cold hard cash.
You need a piece of raw material, the same type as the coins to be minted
(obviously) on the ground, and the current coin mould to form them.
Syntax: use mint coins at
How Coin Stamping Works -- Merchant Skill (text from the BC law office)
Industrious mortals can aid the economy by minting coins to replace those that
have been lost or destroyed. Anyone can purchase a license to mint coins,
however only those with the appropriate skill can use the moulds correctly.
The 'blank' coins made are then brought here to receive the official stamp to
become legal money.
Because the governing bodies don't want to run the risk of inflation, each
mortal is only allowed to have a specific number of coins stamped of each type
during a certain month. Which types and how many are based on your ability to
deal with matters of economic law. New coin moulds are issued every month, and
coins made from older moulds won't be stamped.
Syntax: request mould [cost: 500 gold x coin 'level']
check my status [see how many coins you can have stamped]
stamp [to make some 'blank' coins into official money]
As an example, my law skill is at 101%, and my mint coins is at a measly 73%.
When I typed "check my status" today (the first day the skill was introduced),
I was told:
The law clerk shows you a paper:
Records for Ysaril 696:
Dryad can stamp up to 9460 gold value in each coin type.
No coins stamped so far.
With further training, mint coins is at 80%. "Check my status" shows:
The law clerk shows you a paper:
Records for Blayhrr 697:
Dryad can stamp up to 9720 gold value in each coin type.
No coins stamped so far.
MOULD COSTS

mowgles 0.01 1 500
Each coin mould weighs 3.95 kgs.
There appears to be no limit to the number of moulds you can purchase per boot.
Each mould is marked with its coin type,
Example of mould:
This heavy steel box has many small circular impressions, plus channels and
grooves for chemicals to flow around. It is a mould for minting coins,
however, the coins it would make would have no official stamp on them, and as
such would not be spendable money until that stamp was obtained
It is marked batium/Ysaril 696.
This item is in great condition.

Not surprisingly, the skill is expensive. Here's my cost summary as an
elven alchemist. Training to 100% would run about 30m.

Notes:
- $/kg refers to "gold per kg", or the effective amount
of cash you produced from each kg of material. So a
yield of 1 mithril from 1 kg of material a 500 $/kg ratio.
- The "$/kg" in the table above does NOT take into account the cost
of the mould. See the next table for a summary of total cost/kg.
Partial summaries for the above data (splitting out discrete test-sessions):
Mould
Material Weight Coins Value Bust? $/kg* Dex KoA Mint%

gold,d 12 1292 1292 1 -184 ~157 100 73
Notes:
- This table DOES take into account the cost of the moulds used to
mint the coins, hence the negative $/kg cost for creating coins.
Fail messages:
You are prepared to do the skill.
You gather some metal-etching solvents and start forming a gold nugget into small coin-sized shapes.
Unfortunately, all you do is dissolve the material completely.
AH CRAP you broke the mould too!
You are prepared to do the skill.
You gather some metal-etching solvents and start forming a mithril nugget into small coin-sized shapes.
You were not able to mint even a single lousy coin.
Success messages:
You are prepared to do the skill.
You gather some metal-etching solvents and start forming a gold nugget into small coin-sized shapes.
You manage to get 161 blank gold coins from your efforts.
They don't have any value yet, you need to get them stamped first.
Go to the law office in Bat City.

And some uninformed speculations by the Mere Mortals:
(07:21) Antonius tells you 'So, what do you figure the profit point is for minting?'
You tell Antonius (*Mat Processing*) 'dunno, do you know how much material it takes?'
(07:23) Antonius tells you 'Not sure, haven't even tried. I'm not alch.
I'm hoping the mat loss is <10%, hopefully 0%.'
You tell Antonius (*Mat Processing*) 'heh, well it's not in the game yet :p'
(07:23) Antonius tells you 'So, 1 kg gold makes 1k blanks.'
You tell Antonius (*Mat Processing*) 'and yeah, that would be hilarious. There's no way.'
You tell Antonius (*Mat Processing*) 'if I were coding it myself, it'd be more like
1 kg makes 100 maybe.. so it'd only be worth minting the larger denominations.'
You tell Antonius (*Mat Processing*) 'basically, i can't ever see it worth minting
anything under platinum.. and out of balance if too low a ratio the high coins.'
You tell Antonius (*Mat Processing*) 'unless each type requires different material
quantities... 1000/kg for mowgles, 10/kg for mithril'
(07:25) Antonius tells you 'No need. Even with 0 loss, I can make far more from
copper selling to anyone else. The gross profit for div copper would be about 160/kg.'
You tell Antonius (*Mat Processing*) 'you're not even factoring in the mould
cost... it's significant too. You're definitely correct.'
(07:26) Antonius tells you 'Mould cost is factored in.'
(07:27) Antonius tells you 'right now I can make about 500/kg for div copper,
so I wouldn't touch that.'
(07:29) Antonius tells you 'Now, with no mat loss, silver would make about 500/kg div.
That's pretty much worthwhile. So if you look at it that way, profit at your
levels would only be about 30k/month with no mat loss. I can't see that hurting
the economy. It's almost not worth the hassle for you, let alone lower-level merches.'
You tell Antonius (*Mat Processing*) 'yeah, I threw about 2.5m exp into it today
just to have a decent amount of skill. And unless shinarae vastly tunes the skill,
it's simply not worth having.'
(07:30) Antonius tells you 'Of course, 'almost not worth it' is a pretty safe
spot for anything that can so easily unbalance the game. ,)'
(07:30) Antonius tells you 'Yeah. It's a lot to dump for such a low income.'
You tell Antonius (*Mat Processing*) 'Yeah, it makes sense for Shinarae to be
extremely conservative.'
Antonius tells you 'Yeah. I can only imagine how badly forge coins unbalanced the game.'

A discussion from January 12, 2006:
[22:59]:Dryad [alchemists]: ok, I did some more coin minting..
[22:59]:Dryad [alchemists]: in multiple batches, I used a total of 126 kg of divine mithril
[23:00]:Dryad [alchemists]: I used some dex eq too, spent a few megs on the skill
[23:00]:Dryad [alchemists]: burned through 2 moulds at a cost of 11k for them (total)
[23:00]:Dryad [alchemists]: and produced a grand total of.... (drumroll please)
[23:00]:Dryad [alchemists]: 6 mithril coins!!!
[23:01]:Nyriori [alchemists]: ...
[23:01]:Nyriori [alchemists]: Surely this is not what Shinrae had in mind :P
[23:01]:Dryad [alchemists]: have any of you trained it higher than the 73% I have mine at?
[23:02]:Nyriori [alchemists]: I don't have it at all, and at those rates, I don't know if I ever will
[23:02]:Dryad [alchemists]: I've only spent 2.2m on it, so that's the biggest fault I can see in my data.
[23:02]:Dryad [alchemists]: I can't see spending 30m on it to put it at 100%
[23:03]:Dryad [alchemists]: though I'd like to see data for someone with it at 100%
[23:05]:Dryad [alchemists]: btw on that, I succeeded with ONE skill on a 13 kg chunk .. and fumbled FIVE times on chunks of 20-30kgs
[23:07]:Dryad [alchemists]: my data are at //library/minting_guide.asp, in case anyone cares to view
[23:10]:Shinarae : you're right, that's not what I intended. I intended that 73% skill shouldn't make mithril at all
[23:10]:Dryad [alchemists]: ahh, good to know. I'll quit wasting my ring materials then :)
[23:11]:Shinarae : also that rate is quite low, I did 10kgs with mortal stats (100 all) and skills (also 100 all) and got 4 coins
[23:11]:Shinarae : so 126kg should have yielded far more than 6 coins
[23:13]:Shinarae : wait, I lied. your KoA needs to be high to do mithril coins, not your mint coins skill. sorry
[23:14]:Dryad [alchemists]: mine's at 100, just fyi.. but it'll be a while before I can raise mint coins much :p will see what happens with lesser coins
[23:14]:Shinarae : yes, raise skill to avoid those nasty failures
[23:14]:Daerid {alchemists}: 73% skill fumbling 5 out of 6 is 'working as intended'?
[23:15]:Dryad [alchemists]: thanks for the info.. I've been discouraged, and I'm sure that's discouraging others.
[23:15]:Shinarae : depends what you mean by fumble. the message you get when your use too little material might look like a fumble, but it's not
[23:15]:Nyriori [alchemists]: I'm going to assume that with Dryad's skills, gold coins or such would work out better...?
[23:15]:Dryad [alchemists]: nah all those ate my material completely
[23:16]:Dryad [alchemists]: 5 material-destroying fumbles, 2 of which also destroyed the 5.5k-gold-cost mould
Dryad [alchemists]: but I'll be testing gold next, will report sometime later
[23:28]:Shinarae : also I'll tell you what I told Dryad earlier: minting coins might not make as much money as, say, selling on the exchange, but you also don't need another player for the payoff, either. mint coins is creating money from scratch and, as such, won't give as good a payout as a player-to-player transaction
[23:29]:Sprite [alchemists]: But it's such fun.....
[23:29]:Shinarae : I don't think anyone will make a profit buying metals from the overprices exchange and minting them, for example, but if _your_ metal isn't selling, you can find a good home for it
[23:39]:Dryad [alchemists]: ok, some light testing on gold came out MUCH better
[23:39]:Dryad [alchemists]: I turned 12 kgs of gold into 1292 gold coins
[23:40]:Dryad [alchemists]: only fumbled twice, and dested only one mould
[23:40]:Daerid {alchemists}: Cost of gold: 350(74) / 600(189) (refined)
[23:40]:Daerid {alchemists}: better not buy from exchange then ,)
[23:40]:Dryad [alchemists]: so my final amount of cash created from 12 kgs of gold was -2208 gold :)
[23:40]:Dryad [alchemists]: (1292 minus the 3500-gold-mould)
[23:40]:Shinarae : how are you fumbling all the time :P
[23:41]:Daerid {alchemists}: Gore 'tuned' peoples luck on saturday
[23:41]:Dryad [alchemists]: dunno, even got tascruel boosting my dex as I go :)
[23:42]:Shinarae : you're getting screwed. the skill is supposed to fail about 3% and fumble about 10% of failures
[23:43]:Shinarae : I've checked the math 5 or 6 times
[23:43]:Dryad [alchemists]: ok, I'll hold on more testing until my luck turn the corner :p
[23:43]:Shinarae : 73% isn't supposed to be _that_ bad
[23:44]:Dryad [alchemists]: anyone want these 2 extra gold and 2 extra mithril moulds? free if you give me some data :)
Note: I immediately did 2 shrinesacs, one of 129k sacworth, one of 147k sacworth.
-----------------------------------
Dryad's advice: If you haven't yet trained Mint Coins, don't do it unless you have obscene
amounts of exp to burn. Use create money instead, it's cheaper and far more efficient at the
moment. Or better yet, do ANYTHING else as a merch or alch to make more cash. :)
Hopefully Shinarae will tuning minting in the future. I understand it's a source of new money
in the mud, and as such is dangerous... but when the create money spell rocks so hard compared to
minting, something needs to be changed.
